February Student of the Month: Machiko Shirahata
Teacher: Juliana Burdick
“START ANYTIME AND DON’T GET FRUSTRATED. YOU’LL GET THERE, JUST ENJOY. I ENJOY EVERY MINUTE OF STUDYING MUSIC, EVEN WHEN IT’S DIFFICULT.”
Machiko Shirahata decided to study at the Baltimore School of Music to challenge herself.
“I’m a scientist, so using a different part of my brain is very exciting and makes me think in different ways,” Machiko said.
Machiko, who began voice lessons at BSM last April, said began taking voice lessons because she has always enjoyed singing and wanted to learn better breath control.
She credits her teacher, Juliana Burdick, with teaching her how to improve her breath control.
Machiko’s favorite part about taking lessons at BSM is the dedicated teachers.
Meanwhile, what Machiko enjoys most about taking voice lessons at BSM is knowing she can sing.
“It’s really exciting,” she said. “I did not know (how to).”
In addition, Machiko takes piano lessons at BSM and recently performed in the winter recital. She credits the experience with benefiting her as a student.
“It’s totally different being in front of other people,” she said. “It’s nice to have an opportunity to play.”
Her advice to new students is to just begin.
“Start anytime and don’t get frustrated,” Machiko said. “You’ll get there, just enjoy. I enjoy every minute of studying music, even when it’s difficult.”
