Bach in the Brewery

Baltimore School of Music is launching a new concert series called Bach in the Brewery. The first concert will take place on May 12 at Monument City Brewing Company in Baltimore City.

The concert will feature Baltimore School of Music Director James Lowe on classical guitar and Baltimore School of Music cello teacher Terry Shirley-Quirk on cello. The concert will feature works by Paganini, Satie, and the world premier of a work by local composer Alexa Rinn.

“I really wanted to change the concert experience,” Lowe said. “Going to a formal concert can be a great experience, but sometimes you just want to grab a beer and relax with friends without the formality.”

Lowe came up with the idea based off of a personal experience he had in Germany.

“My favorite concert that I’ve ever attended was in Gau-algesheim, Germany, where I was living for a summer,” Lowe said. “It’s a small town right on the Rhein, and the Mainz Symphony traveled in to play at a local high school. During the concert you could get up and grab a beer or giant pretzel and really enjoy the experience. The acoustics may not have been the best, but it was the most fun I’ve ever had listening to Beethoven’s 1st Symphony.”

Lowe plans to launch a full concert season in 2018-2019, taking place at different breweries in the area.

The concert is for ages 21 and over and will also feature a special VIP ticket option that includes a pre-concert brewery tour and beer tasting.
